Tintagel
Located high on the cliffs of North Cornwall, Tintagel is a beautiful place to spend a holiday in Cornwall. Its Arthurian connections add a magical resonance to this lovely village.
Beaches and Walks
Tintagel is close to some of the loveliest beaches on the Cornish coast. Whilst there is a small beach near the village the sands at Rock and Daymer Bay are just a short drive away. The coastline is renowned for surfing and there are a host of surf schools in the surrounding resorts. Trebarwith Strand is another surfing beach popular with visitors and Harlyn Bay is renowned for its walks and rock pools. Trevone Head is close to Tintagel and has a natural sea pool.
Tintagel is at the heart of the South West Coastal Footpath and there are some beautiful cliff top walks here with dramatic scenery. Coasteering is another activity along the coast and kayaking is also popular. There are several good cycling trails around Tintagel and one of the best is the Camel Estuary. Scuba diving attracts visitors to Tintagel and other areas around the North Cornwall coast, thanks to many of the shipwrecks near here. Fishing trips are very popular and day boats are located all along this coast. Golfers will enjoy the course at St Mellion in North Cornwall.
Attractions
Tintagel castle is a major reason for visiting the village and its position on the cliffs is very dramatic and beautiful. Other connections to King Arthur include the legendary Merlin’s Cave which is below the castle. Near Tintagel is St Nectan’s Well, a grotto associated with the Knights of the Round Table. The Hall of Chivalry in Tintagel is another attraction and popular with families. Nearby, the open spaces of Bodmin Moor are perfect for horse riding and walking and have even more Arthurian connections including Slaughterbridge and Dozmary Pool. Another lovely walk near here is from the village to Bude and Crackington Haven which takes in some spectacular coastal scenery. Tintagel also has a delightful toy museum and a historic old post office which add character to the village.
Tintagel village has some delightful shops and cafes and exploring the narrow streets is a delight. Within a short drive the village of Boscastle is a beautiful place to spend a day with a Museum of Witchcraft and lots of shops and restaurants. Another very popular town on the North Cornish Coast near to Tintagel is Padstow which is renowned for its foodie atmosphere and the seafood restaurants. Cookery lessons are another attraction here as well as all the food tasting. It is also a really picturesque place to visit. For literary fans the Church of St Enodoc at Trebetherick is the resting place of Sir John Betjeman who was inspired by the landscape in this area. Doc Martin fans can also visit the area where the famous TV series is filmed at Port Wenn and Port Isaac which are charming to explore. The historic town of Launceston is a short drive away with its museums and ancient castle.
Tintagel has a wide range of places to stay in and around the village. This includes hotels, campsites, self-catering accommodation and guest houses. With lots of wonderful places to dine out and farm shops selling local ingredients a holiday here is effortless. Its location on the North Cornish coast is one of the most beautiful places to stay in the West Country and it has something for families as well as those on a weekend break. For a legendary holiday in a place full of character the village of Tintagel is hard to beat.
