The village of Rock is a popular beach resort these days and has even earned the name of Kensington on Sea. But what else is in the village and surrounding area to see and do? Here’s a quick guide to what’s on offer for visitors to the area.
Beaches and Sea
People come to the North Cornwall coast for the beaches and the area around Rock does not disappoint. Surfers will enjoy the waves at Harlyn Bay and Trebarwith Strand as well as Treyarnon. For families Summerleaze beach is a firm favourite and kids will love the rock pools at Crooklets. One of the big attractions at Trevone Bay is the natural swimming pool at low tide. Widemouth Bay is another wonderful beach full of rock pools for a spot of crabbing. The area around Rock is on the Camel Valley Estuary and there is an excellent trailway perfect for walking and cycling. Walking routes are aplenty here with the South West Coastal Footpath running through the area as well as hundreds of circular routes that generally take in a pub or tea room. Walks to St Nectan’s Well are very popular as this has connections to King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Scuba diving is another big attraction here and wrecks are scattered all over the sea bed. There are also water skiing lessons and sailing here and the entire coastline is a big attraction for those who love the outdoors.
Attractions in and around Rock
Rock and the surrounding area has a lot to offer visitors. The country town of Wadebridge is close by and Padstow is just a short drive away. This has excellent seafood restaurants and shops and is a big attraction all year round. The Padstow Shipwreck Museum is also very interesting. For Doc Martin fans the villages of Port Quinn and also Port Isaac are the film locations for this TV series and beautiful to visit. Families will enjoy Crealy Adventure Park near Wadebridge and also Go Karting. Near Polzeath Carruan is a farm where young children will enjoy a few animal encounters as well as new Mills Farm near Launceston. For historic castles go no further than Tintagel which is full of Arthurian legend. There’s also Launceston Castle and Bodmin Jail to explore which have intriguing links to the past in Cornwall. Historic houses are a big attraction near Rock and one of the best is Trerice. Lanhydrock is another beautiful manor house and garden near Bodmin with a lot of history attached. All the family will enjoy a ride on the Lappa Valley Railway which is a vintage train ride in picturesque countryside, and there are wild walks on Bodmin Moor. Why not pay a visit to Camel Valley Wines and enjoy tasting the locally grown vintage.
There are lots of places to stay in and around Rock from farmhouses to youth hostels and guest houses. There are hotels nearby too as well as campsites and something to suit most budgets. Many people who visit Rock enjoy a self-catering cottage or apartment and with a wide range of seafood restaurants and farm shops close by there is always an option to cook in or dine out. You can even catch your own supper by taking a day boat out for a mackerel fishing trip. Cornwall has a lot to offer visitors and Rock has a lot of attractions to make a stay here an excellent experience.
